Getting Around Hannover: GVH Tickets, üstra & the Stadtbahn
Trams, buses and tickets explained simply — how to move around Hannover from our door, with tram 7 right outside and easy links to the MHH, Messe and the airport.

Hannover is an easy city to get around once you understand the basics. The whole network — the Stadtbahn (light-rail trams), city buses and regional trains — runs under one system called the GVH (Großraum-Verkehr Hannover), and the trams are operated by üstra. This short guide explains how to buy the right ticket and reach the places most of our guests need: the MHH, the Messe, the airport and the main station.
The Stadtbahn and buses, in plain terms
The backbone of the city is the Stadtbahn — modern trams that run underground in the centre and above ground in the suburbs. Buses fill in the gaps to neighbourhoods the trams do not reach. Everything connects at Kröpcke and the Hauptbahnhof (main station) in the city centre, so you can change easily between lines.
- Stadtbahn: fast, frequent, and the best way to cross the city.
- Buses: handy for shorter local hops and side streets.
- Kröpcke and Hauptbahnhof are the central interchange points.
Which GVH ticket should you buy?
The GVH uses zones — Hannover city is zone A, the surrounding area is B, and the wider region is C. For a single trip buy an Einzelticket; for a day of sightseeing or appointments a Tageskarte (day ticket) is much better value. Longer stays are cheapest with a weekly or monthly pass. You can buy from machines at every stop, on the bus from the driver, or in the GVH app on your phone.
- Einzelticket — a single one-way journey.
- Tageskarte — unlimited rides for one day, great value for two or more trips.
- Weekly and monthly passes — best for longer stays.
- Always validate paper tickets before you travel.
Tram 7 from our front door
Our furnished apartments are at Schierholzstraße 61 in Groß-Buchholz, and tram line 7 begins right outside, with a bus stop next to it. That single line takes you straight into the city centre and on to Kröpcke and the Hauptbahnhof, where every other line meets.
Reaching the MHH, Messe, airport and station
The MHH and INI hospitals are only about 5–10 minutes away by car, with a direct tram and bus link too. For the Hannover Messe, take the Stadtbahn toward the fairground (lines run direct during big fairs). Hannover Airport (HAJ) is roughly 15 minutes away and easiest by car or by the S-Bahn S5 from the Hauptbahnhof. The Hauptbahnhof itself is one straightforward ride from our door.
Driving and taxis
If you prefer to drive, we offer free parking at the house — including space for vans. Taxis are reliable and available day and night, and ride apps work in the city too. Whatever you choose, we are happy to explain the best route for your stay.
Which GVH ticket is best for a short visit?
For a single journey buy an Einzelticket; if you will take two or more trips in a day, the Tageskarte (day ticket) is much better value. For longer stays choose a weekly or monthly pass.
How do I get to the MHH from your apartments?
It is about 5–10 minutes by car, and tram 7 with a bus stop is right at our door for a direct public-transport link.
Can I reach Hannover Airport by public transport?
Yes — the S-Bahn S5 runs from the Hauptbahnhof to the airport. By car it is roughly 15 minutes, and we offer free parking if you drive.
