Moving to Hannover: Your First 7 Days Checklist

A practical, day-by-day checklist for your first week in Hannover — where to sleep, how to register at the Bürgeramt, and the small steps that unlock everything else.

Moving to a new city is mostly a long to-do list, and in Germany the order of the tasks matters. This guide walks you through your first seven days in Hannover — from a soft landing in a furnished apartment to your official Anmeldung, a German SIM, a bank account and your first GVH transport ticket. Do them in roughly this order and the rest falls into place.

Day 1–2: A soft landing in a furnished apartment

Do not sign a long unfurnished lease before you have even seen the city. Start in a furnished apartment in Hannover where the keys, kitchen, Wi-Fi and bed are all ready on arrival. Ours are on Schierholzstraße 61 in Groß-Buchholz: tram 7 and a bus stop are at the door, REWE and a restaurant are next door, and HAJ airport is about 15 minutes away. It gives you a calm base while you sort out the paperwork.

Day 2–3: Get a German SIM and a phone number

Almost every other step asks for a German mobile number — banks, appointment portals, delivery services. Pick up a prepaid SIM from a supermarket, a phone shop or a kiosk on your first full day. Bring your passport, as registration is required for German SIMs. With data and a number in hand, you can book the rest online.

Day 3–5: Anmeldung at the Bürgeramt

The Anmeldung is your mandatory residence registration, and in Hannover you do it at a Bürgeramt. Book an appointment online early — slots fill up fast. You will need your passport, the completed registration form and, crucially, the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung: a short confirmation from your landlord that you live at the address. We can provide this for guests staying with us, so you are not stuck.

Day 5–6: Open a bank account

Your Anmeldung confirmation unlocks most German bank accounts, and a local IBAN makes rent, salary and direct debits painless. Many people open an online account in an afternoon; bring your passport, your registration confirmation and your German phone number. A tax ID (Steuer-ID) usually arrives by post a couple of weeks after your Anmeldung.

Day 6–7: A GVH ticket and the search for a long-term flat

GVH (üstra) runs the trams and buses across the region. Buy a single, a day pass or a monthly ticket through the app or at a machine, and you can reach the whole city from Groß-Buchholz. Use this last day to start viewing longer-term flats while you stay somewhere comfortable — far less stressful than searching from a hotel or from abroad.
