GVH Hannover Explained: Zones, Fare Area & Tickets for Tram and Bus

If you are new to Hannover, the first questions come fast: what is the GVH, which zones exist, and which ticket do I need? Here is the short version for everyone using trams and buses — with tips for guests of our furnished apartments in Groß-Buchholz.

What is the GVH?

GVH stands for Großraum-Verkehr Hannover — the region's public transport network. The GVH fare covers üstra trams and city buses, regional buses, plus S-Bahn and regional trains within the Hannover region. One ticket is valid across all of these.

The GVH zones: fare areas A, B and C

The GVH fare area is divided into three rings: zone A covers the city of Hannover, zones B and C the surrounding region. The ticket price depends on how many zones your trip touches. For most visitors the rule is simple: trips within the city — for example between Groß-Buchholz, the MHH, the main station and the Messe — stay in zone A, the cheapest level.

Which tickets are worth it

• Single ticket or day pass — for individual trips and sightseeing days.
• Deutschlandticket — for stays of a month or longer: valid on local transport nationwide including the GVH, usually the easiest choice for commuters.
• GVH weekly and monthly passes — if you only need Hannover.
• Buy tickets in the GVH app or the üstra app, at machines and service points.

From Groß-Buchholz through the city on line 7

Our apartments at Schierholzstraße 61 are in zone A: tram line 7 stops right outside and runs directly towards the city centre and main station; the MHH is only minutes away. Prefer driving?
